DMT: The Spirit Molecule

In recent decades, the number of drugs available on the market has grown substantially, like the DMT for sale online. This is because tests are continually being carried out at the chemical level to see what new variants or substances can be obtained by experimenting in laboratories. Synthetic drugs are an example of these products for recreational consumption that are usually born in a laboratory .Today we will look at a substance called N,N-dimethyltryptamine, or DMT for short. This drug is one of the most powerful psychoactive compounds that exist. In this article, we will see what this substance is and the effects and consequences that derive from its consumption.

What is DMT?

This drug is a chemical with powerful hallucinogenic properties that is obtained from plant substances. It is generally consumed orally, and can be ingested or inhaled. The effects produced by its consumption appear almost immediately. However, when the substance is inhaled, the effect is faster and avoids possible adverse reactions that occur due to absorption by the stomach when the drug is ingested. DMT is basically a hallucinogenic-type psychoactive drug, so its main effect is to produce hallucinations. These are usually related to mystical and existential aspects. For this reason, DMT is also known as “The God Molecule."

In its presentation, DMT can be found in the form of an extract, or as a refined synthetic. In the latter case, the product is a small solid that is generally white in color. However, if it is mixed with other substances, as is often the case for sale, it can have different colors. DMT is considered to be an entheogen-type substance. This means that it can be found in one or several plant elements. An example of these elements is the Psychotria vidris or chacruna, a plant that is used to prepare ayahuasca, a traditional indigenous drink used by different American peoples.

But in addition to being found in plant elements, DMT is also produced by our own brain. Therefore, it is also considered as an endogenous chemical substance. Finally, at the pharmacological level, this drug is part of the category of tryptamines, a group of alkaloids with neuromodulatory effects.

How does DMT act in the body?

The mechanism of action of this drug is through the inhibition of an enzyme called monoamine oxidase, or MAO. This is activated when another substance prevents it from acting in the body. In this case, the main function of monoamine oxidase is to degrade or inactivate some neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, adrenaline, noradrenaline, and precisely DMT. Thus, when MAO is inhibited, DMT levels are also prevented from progressively decreasing.

Effects of the drug on the body

In general, the effects produced by this drug last between 5 and 30 minutes and are mainly characterized by hallucinations of different types. While these effects are usually short-lived, the experiences they cause are often very intense. Similarly, DMT has been related to brain activity and to the pharmacological treatment of some psychiatric diagnoses. Among the most important effects produced by this substance, we find:

Hallucinations

Hallucinations are the main effect of DMT, sought after by people who buy DMT and inhale it. These hallucinations can be both visual, auditory and sensory, in addition to including a fairly elaborate mystical content. An example of this is the possibility of experiencing extrasensory or non-verbal communication with different beings or the perception of having made astral travel. In addition, if DMT is consumed for a long time and in high doses, manic and psychotic episodes may appear, or an increase in the symptoms associated with these states. Likewise, and in the same way that occurs with psychoactive substances, it can also cause a withdrawal syndrome if there is a sudden withdrawal of consumption.

What is known about its function in the brain

As for how DMT affects the brain, it remains a mystery. There are hypothetical theories that say that this drug is related to dream experiences, that is, in the visual effects developed when we dream. In the same way, there are other hypotheses that say that DMT can serve as a precursor to near-death experiences. This idea is one of the reasons why this substance is called "The God Molecule."

Medical use

On a medical level, DMT has been linked to some neurodegenerative medical conditions, due to its activity in the Sigma-1 receptor, a protein found in much of the central nervous system. Its use has also been significantly linked to various psychiatric diagnoses, such as schizophrenia and treatment for depression. This last aspect could be related to an increase in the global connectivity of some areas of the brain, as well as an enhancing effect of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, associated with euphoric moods, although there is no consensus on this among the scientific community .
